This two-book set brings together Daniel Lieberman’s popular science writing on the human body, health and physical activity. Across both titles, Lieberman considers modern habits through an evolutionary lens, asking what “normal” might look like when measured against the ways most people lived for millions of years.

The collection contrasts contemporary, largely sedentary lifestyles with patterns of daily movement and rest associated with hunting and gathering. It also examines how ideas about exercise have developed in industrialised nations, and why many people find it difficult to stay fit amid misconceptions, anxiety and blame.

Synopses

The Story of the Human Body

This book argues that many modern ways of using our bodies are out of step with how humans evolved. It describes “normal” activity and diet in terms of long-standing hunting-and-gathering patterns, including extensive daily walking and running and minimally processed food.

Lieberman suggests that 21st-century life is out of synch with “stone-age bodies”. While people have never been so healthy and long-lived, the book points to a range of problems that were once rare or unknown, including asthma, diabetes and overpopulation.

Exercised The Science of Physical Activity, Rest and Health

Focusing on industrialised nations, this book links sedentary living with rising obesity and diseases such as diabetes. It examines the common message that exercise is a key remedy, while noting how misconceptions, finger-pointing and anxiety can shape attitudes to fitness.

Lieberman argues that humans did not evolve to exercise for its own sake, but are instead suited to moderate exertion spread throughout the day rather than extreme training or treadmill routines.
