Mr Gum Collection by Andy Stanton brings together nine books featuring the memorably unpleasant Mr Gum. This is a nine-book humour collection set in the town of Lamonic Bibber.
Mr Gum is introduced as a truly nasty old man, but the chaos around him quickly widens. Polly, Jake the dog, heroes, sweets and an evil butcher all crowd into the story as trouble gathers. At the heart of it is a rescue that must be made from “terrible, terrible evil”.
In this second outing, Mr Gum is back and “absolutely grimsters” once again. The book promises weird, wacky humour and introduces a gingerbread man called Alan Taylor with electric muscles, alongside the return of familiar faces. It is described as a cross between Roald Dahl and Monty Python.
Mr Gum and Billy William the Third are “mucking things up” and plotting on Goblin Mountain. Polly and Friday O’Leary face the Three Impossible Challenges as the town risks a fate “worse than something very bad indeed”. The tone is proudly barking bonkers.
Book four in the You’re a Bad Man, Mr Gum! series turns to an ancient curse on Lamonic Bibber. Mr Gum and his sidekick Billy William the Third are, unsurprisingly, tangled up in it. The story is billed as coming from award-winning author Andy Stanton.
Mr Gum returns in a fifth “shamelessly hilarious” instalment that revels in the absurd. Expect bears called Padlock, hot-air balloons, tall sailing ships with mad sea captains, horrifying villains, and a gleeful jumble of words including “wab!”, “tungler” and “kelp”.
Mr Gum develops a new obsession: rancid kebabs dripping with dirty grey sauce. His dreadful dinnertime arrangements do not go down well, and Lamonic Bibber begins gearing up for war. The book leans into escalating mayhem and appetite-driven menace.
Polly and Friday head out on another “crazy adventure” through the streets of Lamonic Bibber. Mr Gum remains the dastardly villain, with Billy William close by as his sidekick. The result is, by its own description, barking bonkers.
Polly and Friday return for more street-level chaos in Lamonic Bibber, with Mr Gum and Billy William once again causing trouble. Questions pile up: could there be eight ladies all called Pamela, and will Friday O’Leary have to wrestle a man-eating octopus? The book promises the same barking-bonkers energy.
This “bumper book” invites you back into Lamonic Bibber “if you dare”. In the dead of night, something dark and sinister is said to stalk the streets. The set-up leans into eerie atmosphere while keeping the series’ distinctive voice.
