This 10-book collection brings together novels from Simon Scarrow’s Eagles of the Empire series, following Roman soldiers through campaigns and crises across the Empire. The set includes stories featuring Quintus Licinius Cato and Centurion Macro, from early service with the Second Legion to later missions that test their loyalty, leadership and survival.
Across the included titles, the action moves from Germany and the invasion of Britain to the eastern frontier and the dangers of the sea. The descriptions reference military life, shifting ranks, hard-fought battles and threats ranging from pirates to revolt, as Cato and Macro face orders, accusations and conflicts that place them at the centre of events.
In AD 42, Quintus Licinius Cato arrives in Germany as a new recruit to the Second Legion. Struggling with the demands of military life, he also faces hostility when imperial connections see him appointed above other soldiers.
In AD 43, Centurion Macro lands in Britain with Emperor Claudius’s invasion force. He faces one of the toughest campaigns of his career.
After bloody battles, Camulodunum has fallen to the Roman army. With the Emperor back in Rome, Centurion Macro and his young Optio, Cato, rest and regroup with the Second Legion.
In AD 44, Vespasian and the Second Legion push on in a campaign to seize the south-west of Britain. Macro and newly appointed centurion Cato are ordered to provide Verica, ruler of the Atrebatans, with an army.
Cato and Macro prepare for what their leaders claim will be the final battle for Britain. As Roman troops are brutally slaughtered, Cato worries about the hot-headed cohort commander Maximius, while Macro begins to doubt the promised ease of victory.
Trouble is brewing in Judaea on the eastern frontier of the Roman Empire. With troops in a deplorable state, Macro and Cato are sent to restore the cohort’s competence.
After the death of their commanding officer, Cato and Macro face possible execution. Offered an alternative by the Emperor’s secretary, they join the marines to hunt pirates threatening Rome’s reputation and a critical supply chain, while seeking scrolls vital to the Empire’s future.
In the first century AD, Rome faces a new threat from Parthia. Parthia competes with Rome for control of Palmyra, an officially neutral kingdom.
Returning to Rome, Cato and Macro are shipwrecked when an earthquake strikes Crete. Reaching shore, they find devastation and a slave revolt led by a gladiator called Ajax.
Pirates commit atrocities under the name of Macro and Cato to stir rebellion against occupying forces. If they cannot stop the pirates in time, it could mark the beginning of the end for the Roman Empire.
