The Plated Prisoner Series by Raven Kennedy is a six-book collection bringing together the novels Gild, Glint, Gleam, Glow, Gold and Goldfinch. Across the set, the narrator describes captivity in different forms, shifting loyalties, and the pressure of conflict spreading between Annwyn and Orea.

The series opens with life locked away in a castle in the Sixth Kingdom of Orea, where freedom is unknown and only King Midas can come and go. As the story continues, one king’s grip is replaced by another’s, with imprisonment, loss and survival shaping what follows. Later instalments describe a turning point after the court of King Midas is burned, and a determination to rise and claim personal power, before the journey leads towards Annwyn and home.

Synopses

Goldfinch

War breaks out between Annwyn and Orea, but it is not the only battle being fought. With one king caging the body and another caging the mind, the narrator describes an inner fight to endure, despite attempts to strip everything away.

Gild

Locked in a castle on the snowy mountains in the Sixth Kingdom of Orea, the narrator has never known freedom. No one can enter or leave, except King Midas, who rescued her from the streets.

Glint

After ten years, the narrator escapes one king’s control only to fall into another’s hands. Following encounters with the Red Raid Pirates, the murder of people she cares about, and survival on the frozen plains of Orea, she becomes a prisoner of the army of the Fourth Kingdom.

Gleam

Confinement is presented as protection, until it becomes clear it is about keeping the narrator in. Midas makes her forbidden and weak, but she describes finding wings and a voice of her own.

Glow

After a life shaped by the greed of others, the narrator decides it ends. She burns down the court of King Midas and intends to rise from the flames and wield her own power.

Gold

Every end is also a beginning. The narrator says she was going to die, but Slade saves her and opens the world for her to pass through, leading to Annwyn and home.
