Synopses

The Art of War

Written by the ancient Chinese general Sun Tzu in the 6th century bc, this is described as the most widely published work on warfare and military strategy, and is noted as having been consulted by figures including Napoleon and Mao Zedong. It addresses all aspects of warfare, promoting strategic flexibility, quick thinking on the battlefield, the use of intelligence and understanding an enemy’s intentions.

The Book of Five Rings

Dating from the mid-17th century, this text was conceived by the Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. While it covers swordsmanship and the martial arts, its discussion of how to deal with conflict has been applied more widely; Musashi explains that the principles can relate to both a two-person duel and a full-scale battle, and emphasises perfecting techniques to improve control and discipline.

The Way of the Samurai

Originally published as Bushido, the Soul of Japan, Inazo Nitobe explores the moral code of the Japanese warrior class, from politeness rituals to ultimate self-sacrifice in war, including hara-kiri or suicide. He also describes the importance of chivalric principles amid brutal warfare, ideals said to resonate in modern Japanese society and the wider world.
