Choosing the right safety gate depends on where you need it, who it's for, and how wide the opening is. Here is a quick guide to the main types.
Pressure fit gates are held in place by tension against the door frame or wall and require no drilling. They are quick to install and remove, making them a popular choice for doorways at ground level. However, they are not recommended for use at the top of stairs, where a more secure fixing is important.
Screw fit gates are fixed directly to the wall with screws and offer a more permanent, secure installation. These are the recommended choice for the top of stairs where a gate coming loose could be dangerous.
Most standard stair gates are around 75 to 80cm in height, which is sufficient for babies and younger children. Extra tall gates, typically 90 to 100cm, are better suited to larger dogs or particularly agile toddlers who may attempt to climb over a standard gate.
Freestanding wooden panels and multi-panel playpens do not require any wall fixings and can be repositioned easily around the home. Gates with integrated cat flaps allow cats to pass through freely while keeping dogs contained. Auto-close gates return to a closed position after use, which is useful in busy households.
A pressure fit gate uses tension to stay in place and requires no drilling, making it easy to install and move. A screw fit gate is fixed to the wall with screws and provides a more secure fitting. Screw fit is always recommended at the top of stairs.
Many gates on this page are designed for dual use with both babies and pets. Check the product description for the recommended use and ensure the gate height is appropriate for the size of your dog.
Measure the width of your doorway or stair opening before buying. Most standard gates fit openings between 63cm and 105cm, with extension panels available for wider openings. Extra wide gates are available for larger openings up to around 103cm without extensions.
Most safety advice suggests keeping stair gates in place until a child is at least two years old and can reliably navigate stairs safely, usually around age two to three. Always supervise young children on stairs even after a gate is removed.
