The Last Kingdom Series is a 13-book collection from Bernard Cornwell, bringing together his novels on the making of England and the fate of Uhtred of Bebbanburg. The series is also linked to the BBC2 television adaptation The Last Kingdom, which is based on the first two books.
Across the set, Uhtred is introduced as a Saxon raised among Vikings, coming of age in a land divided by conflict. As the story continues, peace proves fragile as treaties fail, rival kingdoms clash and succession threatens to fracture the realm. From journeys to Cornwall and the struggle for London, to battles for power across Wessex, Mercia, East Anglia and beyond, the collection follows shifting alliances, invasions and the pull of Uhtred’s Northumbrian inheritance.
England is being forged amid conflict. Uhtred of Bebbanburg is introduced as Saxon by birth and raised among Vikings, coming of age in a land torn apart.
With peace shattered by Danish violence, Uhtred fights to protect a king who distrusts him. Doubting a treaty between the Vikings and Wessex, he heads to Cornwall, where he gains treasure and encounters a mysterious woman.
Uhtred seeks revenge and the return of the land and castle he believes are his, determined to make his uncle answer for taking them. Travelling north with Hild, a former nun, he finds disorder as Vikings battle one another to strengthen their hold.
Set in 885, England is at peace but divided between a Danish kingdom in the north and Alfred’s Wessex in the south. Trouble begins as a dead man rises and new Vikings arrive to take London.
To King Alfred, Uhtred is the lord of battles, with riches, loyal men and a beloved wife. Even so, betrayal and tragedy continue to pursue him.
King Alfred is said to be dying, and rivals for the succession threaten to tear the kingdom apart. As the nation Alfred has built faces collapse, Uhtred, his warrior, longs to fight to reclaim his stolen Northumbrian inheritance.
A fragile peace is close to breaking. Alfred’s son Edward and his daughter Aethelflaed rule Wessex, Mercia and East Anglia.
Alfred the Great is dead and Edward reigns, but peace cannot last. In the north, the Danes led by Cnut Longsword prepare to invade, determined to claim the emerald crown.
England is fractured, torn more by internal conflict than by the threat of Viking invasion. In the struggle for power, only one ruler can prevail.
Uhtred speaks of a long-held dream: to recapture Bebbanburg from the day it was taken from him.
Though Uhtred has won his ancestral home, rebellion threatens in Mercia and Norsemen appear at every turn. He confronts King Skoll, who leads an army of ulfhedinn, and must rely on skill and courage to survive and to prevent Northumbria from falling to Viking forces.
England is in turmoil as Vikings and Saxons fight for territory, while rumours spread of the king’s fatal illness and the question of an heir. After a violent clash at sea, Uhtred leads his men from his Northumbrian fortress to London and into the centre of the conflict.
Uhtred’s household is secure with his warriors and a new woman, yet danger remains beyond the walls of his fortress as power struggles intensify. King Aethelstan has unified Wessex, Mercia and East Anglia and looks to expand further, while King Constantine and other Scottish and Irish leaders seek to extend their dominion.
