Christina Henry Chronicles of Alice 5 Book Set brings together five stories, including Near the Bone, Looking Glass and Red Queen. The collection opens in the Old City, where a hospital’s cinderblock walls hold the cries of those inside, and a woman with tangled, once-blond hair struggles to remember how she came to be there.

Beyond the Old City, the world that was meant to be green and hopeful has become ash, with rest still out of reach. Elsewhere, in the New City, Elizabeth hides an ability to do magic while someone close to her guards a secret of his own. The set also includes a retelling of a story everyone thinks they know, and a tense mountain life where Mattie learns that isolation may be an illusion.

Synopses

Alice

In the Old City, a hospital stands among crumbling buildings and desperate people. Inside is a woman who cannot remember why she is there, recalling only a tea party long ago, long ears and blood.

Red Queen

The land beyond the Old City was meant to be lush and hopeful, a place where Alice could finally rest. Instead, the fields are ash and hope is absent.

Looking Glass

In the New City, Elizabeth lives with a secret: she can do magic. Someone knows what she is hiding, and he has a secret too, tied to a butterfly kept in a jar and a name that used to be Jabberwock.

Lost Boy

There is the story everyone knows, and then there is the truth. Once, the narrator loved a boy called Peter Pan, who brought her to his island without rules or grownups, where his idea of fun proves dangerously sharp.

Near the Bone

Mattie cannot remember life before living alone on a mountain with William, and she must never upset him. When she finds a mutilated fox in the woods, she realises they are not alone.
