Synopsis

Drawing on more than 25 years of experimentation, refinement and tutoring, Judy Wilford sets out an approach to creating hand-embroidered landscapes that can be adapted to depict different regions. Techniques are presented as a combination and adaptation of art genres, textiles, traditional stitches and hand embroidery methods, with an emphasis on building depth through layering and surface stitchery.

The book is organised in two parts. Part 1 introduces materials and equipment, then works through a simple landscape design to demonstrate background layering and foreground surface elements, including stitches adapted to suggest grass, trees and flora; it also includes the “Of the Tablelands” project, which can be completed in two variations. Part 2 extends the methods through projects based on coastlines, escarpments, plains and deserts, supported by stitch samplers and regional flora studies, for a total of eight projects.
