Scottish seascape photography capturing Elgol and the Cuillin Ridge at dusk

This coastal photograph was made on the shoreline at Elgol, on the west coast of the Isle of Skye, looking across Loch Scavaig towards the Cuillin Ridge. The image records the moment just after sunset, when the sky carries deep reds and purples and the remaining light reflects across the water, briefly illuminating the foreground rocks before fading.

The Cuillin mountains form a distinctive, serrated silhouette along the horizon. Composed largely of gabbro and basalt, the range is known for its dark, angular forms, which often read as almost graphic shapes when backlit. Here, the peaks sit in near-black relief against the sky, anchoring the composition and giving the scene a strong sense of place without relying on detail.

In the foreground, the stepped volcanic rocks of the Elgol shoreline are gently lit by reflected sky colour rather than direct sunlight. This indirect illumination brings out their texture and layered structure, creating a quiet contrast between the solid geometry of the rocks and the smoother movement of the water beyond.
