Their gaze betrays a life of stealth, power and river-bank patience. Tigers are one of the few felines that relish water, padding silently through mangrove creeks before exploding towards prey at bursts of up to 65 km h. Yet despite such prowess, fewer than 4 000 individuals still roam wild; most will never know the 20-kilometre nightly territories their ancestors ruled.
