Synopsis

Created to modernise a traditional subject, this course-structured text was evolved for use with high-speed digital computers and current industry practice, then refined through years of classroom use. Central emphasis is placed on the universal variable formulation, with classical methods also discussed, and the book includes several original, previously unpublished derivations.

It builds from the basic two-body and n-body equations of motion through orbit determination, classical orbital elements, coordinate transformations and differential correction. Later chapters develop orbital transfer manoeuvres, time-of-flight (with emphasis on the universal variable solution), and detailed treatments of the Kepler and Gauss problems, before applying two-body mechanics to ballistic missile analysis and extending to lunar and interplanetary flight. Exercises conclude each chapter, and the authors outline how to use the material for either a first course or a two-course sequence for engineering students.
