Introduced on the Southern Railway in 1927, Maunsell’s diagram 2652 third class dining saloons were built to give third class passengers access to kitchen services provided in first class kitchen/dining coaches. Hornby’s Maunsell Third Class Dining Saloon 1363 SR recreates this distinctive coach style as an authentically replicated model railway coach, reflecting the ‘low-window’ Maunsell exterior with ventilators above the windows and doors at each end, gently recessed to keep grab handles within gauging limits.
Inside the prototype layout, each coach accommodated 64 diners, with two toilets positioned at the end furthest from the kitchen/dining first coach. Operational practice later evolved; from 1930, the six third class restaurant dining saloons were reclassified as open thirds, as dining provision was considered better served by the newer ‘high-window’ open third saloons.
