Built for higher-speed running on Britain’s Victorian-era railways, the Mk3 coach became a key part of British Railways’ InterCity 125 story. Hornby’s Mk3 TGS 44057 Coach B in LNER livery recreates this later chapter, reflecting the fleet inherited by LNER in 2018 after taking over the InterCity East Coast franchise. Mk3 coaches introduced notable advances over the Mk2, including secondary air suspension between the bogies and coach body, aerodynamic underframe skirting, and braking and wheel protection systems intended to support faster deceleration.
The Mk3 design first appeared with the HST prototype in 1972 and entered service in 1975 alongside the Class 43 power cars. LNER’s Mk3 coaches finished operations after a farewell tour at the end of December 2019, following the introduction of Class 800 and 801 sets, making this an appealing choice for layouts depicting the final years of InterCity 125 service.
