Built for Britain’s 125 mph railway era, the Mk3 coach became a defining part of the InterCity 125 story. This Hornby model recreates a Mk3 TS in LNER running, numbered 42240, for adding to an East Coast-inspired rake. The prototype Mk3 introduced major advances over earlier coaching stock, including secondary air suspension between the bogies and coach body, aerodynamic underframe skirting, and a longer 75 ft (23 m) body for increased capacity. Disc brakes and wheel slip protection were also part of the Mk3 design, supporting faster deceleration in service.
Mk3 coaches first appeared with the HST prototype in 1972 and entered service from 1975 alongside the Class 43, forming the InterCity 125 trainset. LNER later operated IC 125 sets until the final farewell tour at the end of 2019, making this coach a fitting choice for layouts reflecting the modern East Coast main line.
