Introduced for the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, the Mk4 coach brought a new generation of intercity design to British rail. Hornby’s Mk4 Open First Coach K in Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) livery represents vehicle 11288 from the fleet built at Metro-Cammell’s Washwood Heath factory between 1989 and 1992.
The Mk4 programme delivered a number of advances over the earlier Mk3 stock, including push-button operated plug-type doors and fully sealed gangways, with a design influenced by the Advanced Passenger Train. Entering service from 1989, the coaches later moved into leasing ownership following privatisation, operating under the InterCity East Coast franchise. A major refurbishment carried out by Bombardier Transportation for GNER between October 2003 and November 2005, known as ‘Project Mallard’, introduced new seating arrangements and onboard Wi‑Fi.
