Introduced for the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, the Mk4 coach became a defining part of modern InterCity travel from 1989 onwards. This Hornby Mk4 Open First Coach L LNER 11312 recreates the prototype design that brought notable changes over the earlier Mk3 stock, including push-button operated plug-type doors and fully sealed gangways.
The real Mk4 fleet was built at Metro-Cammell’s Washwood Heath factory, with 314 coaches produced between 1989 and 1992. Following privatisation in 1996, the coaches were sold to Evershot Rail Group and leased to successive InterCity East Coast franchise operators, including Great North Eastern Railway (GNER), National Express East Coast, East Coast, Virgin Trains East Coast and London North Eastern Railway (LNER). A later refurbishment programme, ‘Project Mallard’, ran between October 2003 and November 2005 under contract from GNER.
