Hornby Mk4 Standard/Kitchen Transport for Wales 10328

Hornby’s Mk4 Standard/Kitchen Transport for Wales 10328 brings a modern-era coaching stock design to a model railway layout. The Mk4 coaches were built at Metro-Cammell’s Washwood Heath factory, with 314 Mk4 coaches produced between 1989 and 1992 for the newly electrified East Coast Main Line. They introduced a number of changes over the Mk3s, including push-button operated plug-type doors and fully sealed gangways, and were designed for a top speed of 140mph.

Much of the Mk4 design drew on the Advanced Passenger Train, with sides profiled to allow a tilt of up to 6° alongside newly fitted tilting bogies. Following privatisation in 1996, the fleet was sold to Evershot Rail Group and leased to the holder of the InterCity East Coast Franchise. Refurbishment work carried out by Bombardier Transportation between October 2003 and November 2005 under contract from GNER was known as ‘Project Mallard’.
