Jack Reacher Series (16-20) is a five-book collection set by Lee Child. This set brings together five instalments from the Jack Reacher series.
In March 1997, a woman is found murdered behind a bar in Mississippi, close to a major army base. Jack Reacher, then a major in the military police, is sent in undercover as questions mount over whether the killer is local or connected to the base. Working alongside the county sheriff, a former U.S. Marine, the investigation is complicated by suspicion and the possibility of interference from higher up.
Hitching a lift proves difficult for Reacher, especially with a freshly broken nose, until three strangers finally stop. Their stories quickly begin to unravel, and a police roadblock ahead suggests something serious has happened. As the pressure rises, Reacher must work out who is lying, who is being hunted, and whether he has been drawn in as cover for someone else.
Reacher reaches Virginia to visit the headquarters of his former unit, the 110th Military Police, intending to meet the new commanding officer, Major Susan Turner. On arrival, Turner has vanished and the situation turns strange. Accused of a sixteen-year-old homicide and pulled back into the army, Reacher keeps his counsel while searching for a way out.
Now living as a drifter, Reacher is tracked down by the army after an attempt is made on the French president. The authorities believe only one man could have taken the long-range shot, and Reacher is tasked with finding him. The search takes him to Paris and then to London, with the stakes escalating as the case becomes intensely personal.
With nowhere to be and time to spare, Reacher stops at a remote railroad point on the prairie called Mother’s Rest. Expecting little more than an empty landmark, he instead finds a woman waiting for a missing colleague and a cryptic note referencing two hundred deaths. The town itself feels closed and watchful, and Reacher is drawn into questions nobody seems willing to answer.
