This four-book collection by Andrew Taylor brings together the opening titles in the James Marwood & Cat Lovett series. Set during periods of upheaval in England, it follows James Marwood, described as the son of a traitor, as he becomes entangled in dangerous investigations amid rising political tension.

The sequence begins in London in 1666, as the Great Fire rips through the city and a murdered man is found in the ruins of St Paul’s Cathedral. As London rebuilds under the Fire Court, further deaths draw Marwood into an increasingly volatile landscape. The set also moves into the court of Charles II, where a single mistake can bring ruin, and to a country anxious to avoid a return to civil conflict as Richard Cromwell re-enters England.

Synopses

The Ashes of London

London, 1666: as the Great Fire consumes the city, a man’s body is discovered in the ruins of St Paul’s Cathedral, stabbed in the neck with his thumbs tied behind his back. James Marwood, the son of a traitor, is compelled to track the killer through the devastated streets.

The Fire Court

In the aftermath of the Great Fire, London rebuilds under the direction of the Fire Court, yet the city remains unstable and dangerous. When Marwood’s father finds a dead woman in the very place where the Fire Court sits, Marwood is pulled into a perilous situation.

The King’s Evil

At the court of Charles II, a wrong step can mean disgrace, exile or death. The discovery of a body at the home of one of the highest courtiers threatens far-reaching consequences.

The Last Protector

With England determined to avoid a return to the bloody days of the Civil War, tensions rise as loyalties fracture. Richard Cromwell, Oliver Cromwell’s son, leaves exile and slips back into England, with potentially catastrophic results.
