Choosing the right bike for a child comes down to two things: wheel size and age. Here is a quick guide to help.
10 inch: Suitable for children aged 2 to 3 years old. Usually a balance bike or training bike with no pedals.
12 inch: Suitable for ages 3 to 5. Often comes with stabilisers for children who are not yet ready to balance unaided.
14 inch: Suitable for ages 4 to 6. A good step up from a first bike, still often available with stabilisers.
16 inch: Suitable for ages 5 to 7. Most children at this stage are riding without stabilisers.
20 inch: Suitable for ages 6 to 9. Covers BMX, junior mountain bike and freestyle styles.
24 inch: Suitable for ages 8 to 12. Junior mountain bikes and hardtails at this size are suitable for trail riding.
Note: These are general guidelines. Height matters more than age — always check the manufacturer's recommended height range before buying.
A balance bike has no pedals and teaches children to steer and balance naturally by pushing along with their feet. Most children who learn on a balance bike find the transition to a pedal bike much easier, often skipping stabilisers altogether. Balance bikes are generally recommended from around 18 months to 4 years old.
A 12 inch bike is generally suitable for children aged 3 to 5, with an approximate inside leg measurement of 35 to 42 cm. Many 12 inch bikes come with stabilisers for added confidence during the early stages.
A balance bike is widely recommended as the best first bike for children aged 2 and above. Without pedals, they allow young children to develop balance and coordination at their own pace before moving on to a pedal bike.
Many kids bikes in the 10 to 14 inch range come with stabilisers fitted or included. Stabilisers can usually be removed as the child gains confidence. Check the individual product listing for details.
Most 5 year olds ride a 14 or 16 inch bike depending on their height. A child with an inside leg of around 45 to 52 cm will typically suit a 16 inch wheel.
