Synopsis

Liberated in 1945, Lily Ebert received a banknote from a Jewish-American soldier, marked with the words ‘Good luck and happiness’. Decades later, her great-grandson Dov used social media to trace the soldier’s family, and Lily’s story reached audiences around the world.

In Lily’s Promise, she writes about her childhood in Hungary and what happened to her family on arrival at Auschwitz in 1944, as well as her efforts to keep her sisters safe. She describes the camp, the small acts of defiance that helped her endure, and the later stages of her ordeal, including forced labour in a munitions factory and a death march. The memoir also follows her life after the war, as she rebuilt her family’s future in Israel and later in London, while finding the strength to speak out about what she had lived through.
