Synopsis

This hands-on guide sets out the essentials for creating murals indoors or outdoors, from choosing paints and brushes to working with different wall surfaces and preparing an area for painting. Practical planning is given equal weight, with guidance on considering light and space, finding inspiration, and using colour alongside different approaches to style.

Techniques for transferring a design from paper to wall or ceiling are explored, including the traditional grid method and the authors’ ‘doodle grid’. Step-by-step photography and instructions introduce a variety of themed projects, from Chinoiserie and graphic botanical to celestial, tropical jungle, linear abstract, florals and painterly abstract designs, with advice on combining methods for varied results.
