It is engineered to bend or break under impact or load, reducing the likelihood of damage being transferred to the frame itself.

Everyday handling can sometimes put unwanted pressure on the rear mechanism; for example, resting a bike gear-side down in a car or allowing other bikes to lean against it can place weight onto the rear mechanism and lead to a bent or broken hanger. When the hanger is out of alignment, shifting performance may be affected, with typical symptoms including slow or hesitant upshifts and downshifts.
