This three-book collection brings together Phil Earle’s Second World War stories, When the Sky Falls, Until the Road Ends and While the Storm Rages. Each novel centres on a young protagonist navigating upheaval, separation and difficult decisions as conflict disrupts everyday life.

Across the set, the stories move between city streets under bombardment and the comparative safety of evacuation. Animals sit at the heart of each narrative, from a rundown zoo and its silverback gorilla to a stray dog who becomes an unlikely hero. Together, the books explore loyalty, survival and the bonds formed in extraordinary circumstances.

When the Sky Falls

In 1941, Joseph is sent to the city as the war intensifies and bombers fill the skies. He is taken in by Mrs F, a gruff woman whose focus is her rundown zoo and Adonis, its powerful silverback gorilla. As relationships develop and secrets emerge, the danger of bombing raises a devastating question about what could happen if Adonis is set free.

Until the Road Ends

Peggy rescues a stray dog, Beau, and they quickly become inseparable, until the war forces them apart. Evacuated to the coast, Peggy is separated from Beau, who stays in the city and becomes an unlikely war hero during air raids, searching the streets and saving families night after night.

After disaster changes Peggy’s life, she and Beau are left alone and far apart. Beau sets out with a plan to bring them back together.

While the Storm Rages

In September 1939, as the world edges towards war, Noah promises his father he will keep their family dog safe. When the government advises people to have pets put down in preparation for wartime chaos, Noah refuses. With two friends, he runs to protect his dog and to save as many animals as he can.
