Originally thought to be adopted by French shepherds, berets became popular with the Parisian artists of the left bank (including Monet, Cezanne, and Picasso among others) in the mid 19th century to 20th centuries. It could be that berets were a rather practical way to keep your head warm for those struggling artists, as well as a style statement!

Berets later became synonymous with underground resistance, when France was occupied by Germany in WW2.  Up until the thirties, berets had been worn by men, but it was Coco Chanel who turned women's berets into a seductive fashion statement. Coco was known for taking men’s clothes and adapting them for women, inspiring film stars like Greta Garbo and Brigitte Bardot to wear them.

Thanks to Ms Chanel, the beret has been an iconic women’s fashion accessory for generations.
