Synopsis

Part travelogue, part artistic meditation and part hands-on guide, this book traces the symbolic language of stitch from indigenous communities to contemporary urban streetscapes. Eight regional and modern approaches are introduced through photography, storytelling and technique, including Tenango, Street, Mazahua, Toninero, Mixe and Purépecha embroidery.

Alongside established motifs and stitches, it also considers experimental practices such as Lavín embroidery using human hair, plus the author’s own abstract, texture-led compositions. Practical sections cover tools, materials and transferring designs, supported by over 30 templates to copy and use, including eight pages of full-size patterns. Photography is by Pedro Aragón, and the text is translated from the Spanish title Mexico, Embroidered.
