Synopsis

Often described as a departure within Dostoyevsky’s early writing, this Saint Petersburg-set novella follows a brooding, reclusive scholar, Vasily Mikhailovich Ordynov, whose fixation on a young woman, Katerina, draws him into an unsettling domestic arrangement. After seeing her with her much older husband at a church service, he manoeuvres his way into their home as a lodger, only to sense the husband’s strange hold over her and the shadow of a past that refuses to stay buried.
