Tim Pears West Country Trilogy brings together three novels set between 1911 and 1916, rooted in the landscapes and estates of the West Country. The collection follows moments of change and upheaval, moving from a secluded valley on the Devon–Somerset border to the realities of wartime service at sea.

Across the set, the focus shifts between young characters shaped by their surroundings. Leopold Sercombe’s early life is framed by the farming calendar and his hopes of working on an estate stud farm, while later he is shown far from home aboard HMS Queen Mary. The trilogy also introduces Lottie, thirteen and isolated, who turns to the natural world around her father’s estate for solace and understanding.

Synopses

The Horseman

In 1911, life in a forgotten valley on the Devon–Somerset border is measured by the rituals of the farming year. Twelve-year-old Leopold Sercombe skips school to help his father, a carter, while dreaming of work on the estate’s stud farm. While breaking a colt, he encounters a boy dressed in a Homburg, breeches and riding boots.

The Redeemed

By 1916, the world is at war and Leo Sercombe is hauling coal aboard HMS Queen Mary, far from the West Country roads of his childhood. Life on the battlecruiser is described as a world of steel, smoke, spray and sweat, where danger feels close at hand.

The Wanderers

Thirteen-year-old Lottie is lonely and grieving for her exiled best friend, and feels trapped. She finds her only comfort in studying the natural world around her father’s estate, observing its plants and predators and its patterns of life, death and survival.
