Made from corrosion-resistant galvanised iron with a silver finish, each arched cage is intended to be filled with rocks or gravel to create a stable wall that holds its shape in place. The open mesh construction uses 3.5 mm wire with a 5 x 10 cm mesh, while strengthened gabion hooks draw opposing wire panels tightly together. Natural fill materials such as concrete, sandstone and coloured stone can also be used where a more distinctive finish is required.
