Chronicles of Ancient Darkness is an eight-book collection by Michelle Paver, set thousands of years ago when the land is one vast forest and people live as hunter-gatherers. Synopses

Wolf Brother

In a time when the land is one dark forest, an ambitious and malevolent force conjures a demon that can be contained only in the body of a ferocious bear. After witnessing his father murdered, 12-year-old Torak is left with a burden: he must lead the bear to the mountain of the World Spirit and beg for help to overcome it.

Spirit Walker

Torak and his wolf cub companion challenge the demon bear, and with the help of the World Spirit the bear is destroyed, but Wolf is lost in an avalanche. Torak’s quest continues as a silent, deadly sickness threatens the Ravens, and he must travel alone to the Seal Clan in search of a cure. On the Seals’ Island he encounters a sea-bound way of life and is welcomed by the Seal Mage, Teneris, and Bale.

Soul Eater

Reunited with Wolf after surviving the Seal Islands, Torak’s relief is brief when Wolf is snatched as mid winter approaches. Torak and Renn head into the Far North, following a dangerous path of deceit and treachery. There they come face to face with feared mages, including Thiazzi, Seshru, Nef and the mysterious Masked One, bound by their desire for all creatures to bow before them.

Outcast

A dreadful secret is revealed and Torak is cast out from the clans in his fourteenth summer. Alone and hunted, he takes refuge in the haunted reedbeds of Lake Axehead, where the Hidden People menace him. With further threats nearby and his battle with the Soul-Eaters continuing, Torak uncovers a deception that shakes him to the core.

Oath Breaker

After being outcast and hunted, Torak becomes the hunter when he swears to avenge the killing of one of his closest friends. To fulfil his oath he must brave the hidden valleys of the Deep Forest, where the clans have reverted to earlier savagery. Torak learns why he is the Spirit Walker and discovers the true cost of revenge.

Ghost Hunter

As winter approaches and Souls Night draws near, the Eagle Owl Mage holds the clans in terror. Torak must seek the mage’s lair in the Mountain of Ghosts, defying demons and tokoroths and passing through the Gorge of the Hidden People. Wolf faces terrible grief, Renn makes an agonising decision, and Torak confronts a heart-rending choice in the final battle against the Soul-Eater.

Vipers Daughter

When she mysteriously disappears, Torak and Wolf travel into the Far North to find her. At the mercy of the Sea Mother and haunted by ravenous ice bears, their search leads to the Edge of the World. There they must face an enemy more evil than any they have encountered, in a Stone Age world of demons, Hidden People and adventure.

Skin Taker

Chaos spreads as bears prowl the shadowy valleys and desperate clans battle for survival, while demons thrive. With their world in turmoil, Torak, Renn and Wolf are tested as a new evil haunts the devastated land. Torak must risk his sanity, his life and even his souls to save everything he loves.
