This three-book set brings together Clare Balding’s Charlie Bass stories, following a ten-year-old who is devoted to horses and longs for a pony of her own. Charlie’s plans shift when she unexpectedly ends up buying a racehorse, Noble Warrior, and finds herself dealing with the realities of life at Folly Farm.

Across the collection, Charlie faces setbacks and surprises as Noble Warrior presents one challenge after another, from refusing to gallop to events that disrupt the farm. With friends alongside her and the horses in her care, the stories track Charlie’s response to changing circumstances, including moments of uncertainty and determination.

Synopses

The Racehorse Who Wouldn't Gallop

Charlie Bass is a horse-mad ten-year-old who dreams of owning a pony. When she accidentally buys a racehorse, she is thrilled by Noble Warrior’s strong, fit and healthy appearance. The problem is that he will not gallop, and he will not even leave his stable without his best friend, a naughty palomino pony called Percy.

The Racehorse Who Disappeared

After Noble Warrior wins the Derby and saves Charlie’s family from financial ruin, life starts to settle. Drama returns to Folly Farm when thieves break in during the night and kidnap Noble Warrior. With the police unable to find any trace of him, Charlie begins her own investigation.

The Racehorse Who Learned to Dance

Noble Warrior has won the Derby and overcome kidnappers, but a new challenge appears. Charlie’s best friend Polly is recovering from an accident that left her almost paralysed, and she has a talent with horses. Charlie and Polly are determined to find a way to support Polly’s equestrian dreams and explore a new direction for the racehorse who would not gallop.
