Hank Zipzer: The World’s Greatest Underachiever slipcase collection brings together ten stories following Hank as he navigates school, family life and the everyday situations that have a habit of spiralling into trouble. Across the set, Hank faces everything from class events and reports to sports choices and science projects, often with big plans that do not go quite as expected.
The collection includes adventures set on a New York Harbor sailing ship, a school Multi-Cultural Day lunch, end-of-year parent-teacher conferences and the annual school Olympiad. Along the way, Hank deals with summer school, Halloween mishaps, worries about grades and the challenge of finding a sport to specialise in.
Hank looks forward to the “Best Field Trip of the Year”, an overnight stay on an old-fashioned three-mast sailing ship in New York Harbor. Chosen as first mate, he soon finds the role harder than expected, especially with a captain who takes the job very seriously.
Hank cannot wait for the school Multi-Cultural Day lunch, where the focus is on cooking rather than reading and writing. When his teacher tries his super spicy enchiladas, Hank starts to wonder if he accidentally added far too much chilli powder.
With parent-teacher conferences approaching, Hank panics that he might be made to repeat fourth grade. He comes up with a complicated plan to send his parents out of town during the conference days, but it backfires.
Hank wants nothing to do with summer school, but he cannot avoid it. He worries about spending the summer stuck in a sweltering classroom and wonders whether he might learn something unexpected.
After summer school, Hank thinks his problems are behind him, but fifth grade brings a new challenge. Everyone must choose a favourite sport and specialise, and Hank is anxious because he cannot run, catch or throw.
On Halloween, Hank plans to get back at school bully Nick McKelty by turning his living room into a haunted house. His dog, Cheerio, becomes so frightened that he runs away, leaving Hank to question whether things have gone too far.
Hank wants to do well at school and tries not to be lazy or late, yet he keeps getting into trouble. He cannot understand why it happens so often, or why he feels like the world’s greatest underachiever.
Hank dreads getting his report, and his fears come true when he receives straight Ds. With his parents unlikely to be pleased, he knows he needs help quickly.
Science-project time is bad news for Hank, even though he loves experiments. Writing a report is another matter, and when he finally finds the perfect project, his sister’s pet iguana causes problems.
The annual Olympiad is the most anticipated day of the school year, and Hank is chosen as his team’s softball pitcher. With the pressure on and doubts about his athletic ability, he must see if he can lead his team to victory.
