The World of Norm Collection is a 12-book box set by Jonathan Meres, following Norm through a run of “massively unfair” adventures. Across the series, ordinary days repeatedly spiral into situations that go from bad to worse, with family chaos, awkward visits and mishaps that derail plans.
Norm’s life rarely stays straightforward for long, whether he is waking up in 18th century France after falling asleep in History or finding himself home alone with the fridge to himself. Along the way there are perfect cousins, a dog-related injury, a brother in urgent need of deodorant, and even a family going “vege-flipping-tarian”. The collection is described as an award-winning, laugh-out-loud series for fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, David Walliams and Tom Gates.
Norm can tell it will be “one of those days” when he heads to the toilet for something to do. With Brian and Dave discovering Dad’s million-year-old aftershave, Mikey feeling particularly low, and Chelsea taking her time to move, the day only gets worse.
Norm’s day begins badly and a visit to his perfect cousins threatens to make it worse. They have the brand new Call Of Mortal Battle, but Norm cannot play after being banned from Xbox following an incident involving a stinky dog at bath time.
Norm cannot understand why his family had to move. In the old house he never tried to pee anywhere other than a toilet, and now Dad’s snoring keeps him awake. He is left wondering if life will ever feel less unfair.
What starts like a dream quickly turns into another bad-to-worse day when the perfect cousins arrive. Norm is forced to go on a walk, and the story continues his frustration that everything always seems unfair.
Norm feels as if the world has gone mad: Dad is obsessed with gas, his best friend has “a case of hormones”, and his brother urgently needs deodorant. With a stink on the horizon, Norm decides life is still unfair.
Norm questions the move again, remembering how different things were in the old house. Kept awake by Dad’s snoring, he is left asking whether life will ever become less unfair.
After his first four unfair adventures, Norm is back and expects another difficult day. A dog-related injury stops him biking, and an old “friend” threatens something even more important to him than his bike. With upset plans and upset stomachs, Norm’s bad luck may be contagious.
Norm wakes up in 18th century France after falling asleep in History. He wishes he had done his punishment exercise and that he could go biking instead of playing football, but biking is not an option.
The ninth title in the series is described as a hilarious entry in an award-winning, laugh-out-loud collection. It is recommended for fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and David Walliams.
In the tenth title, Norm loses his house, and even after finding it, things do not improve. He imagines his parents at a salsa dancing event with his best friend, while Mikey’s behaviour suggests hormones may be involved.
Norm wakes up and nothing happens, leaving him home alone with the fridge to himself. Problems soon appear, including snails, hanging his mum’s pants out to dry, the perfect cousins visiting, and the whole family becoming “vege-flipping-tarian”.
Norm wakes up about to pee in his mum’s wardrobe, which feels like the same old routine. With his thirteenth birthday approaching, he hopes things might improve, but he is not convinced. Even so, he wonders whether the worst nightmares have to end sooner or later.
