This three-book set from the Hedgehog & Friends series by Eoin McLaughlin and Polly Dunbar brings together gentle stories featuring Hedgehog, Tortoise and Owl. Across the collection, the familiar characters look for connection, friendship and ways to show care for one another.
From a flipbook tale about finding the right hug, to a story shaped by waiting for a friend to wake, and a book about expressing love when you cannot touch, each title focuses on small, character-led moments. Together, the books explore closeness, patience and affection through the animals’ interactions.
In this flipbook story, Hedgehog and Tortoise are both looking for a hug. They ask the animals they meet, but no one will hug them. Owl explains that Hedgehog is too spiky and Tortoise is too bony, and that is when they find each other.
Hedgehog waits for Tortoise to wake up, wondering where he is and when he will wake. Although Hedgehog’s friends are lovely, they are not as much fun for beach trips, hide and seek, holding hands or hugs. Tortoise begins to stir, linked to a boulder Hedgehog did not think he could lift to turn.
Owl reassures the friends that there are many ways to show someone you love them. They wave, blow kisses, sing songs, dance around and write letters. Even without hugs or touch, they both know they are loved.
