Hornby’s 1:76 scale model captures British Rail Class 87 locomotive 87012 in Network SouthEast company markings, bringing a distinctive chapter of modern electric traction to a model railway collection. Built by British Rail Engineering at Crewe between 1973 and 1975, the Class 87 fleet of thirty-six 25kV 5,000hp locomotives evolved from the Class 86 for express work on the West Coast Main Line, with continuous operation at speeds up to 110mph.
Locomotive 87012 entered service in January 1974 and later became widely recognised by the names ‘Coeur de Lion’ and ‘The Olympian’. After withdrawal in 2006, it was exported to Bulgaria in 2007 for trials and then joined the remaining fleet in freight service. Today it continues to operate under BZK. This analogue DC model is ready-to-run.
