Hornby Mk4 Open First Coach K LNER 11284

Introduced for the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, the Mk4 coach became a defining part of modern InterCity travel from 1989 onwards. This Hornby Mk4 Open First Coach K recreates LNER 11284 as an authentically replicated model railway coach, reflecting the fleet built at Metro-Cammell’s Washwood Heath factory between 1989 and 1992.

The real Mk4 design brought notable advances over the Mk3, including push-button operated plug-type doors, fully sealed gangways and a designed top speed of 140mph. Its development drew on the Advanced Passenger Train, with profiled sides to allow a tilt of up to 6° alongside newly fitted tilting bogies. Mk4 stock later underwent Bombardier Transportation’s ‘Project Mallard’ refurbishment for GNER, introducing new seating arrangements and onboard Wi‑Fi.
