Introduced for the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, the Mk4 coach became a defining part of modern British rail travel from 1989 onwards. This Hornby Mk4 Open First Coach, finished as Transport for Wales 11323, brings that later-life operation into a model railway format, reflecting a coach type built between 1989 and 1992 at Metro-Cammell’s Washwood Heath factory.
The real Mk4 design introduced notable changes over the Mk3, including push-button operated plug-type doors, fully sealed gangways and a designed top speed of 140mph. Its development drew on the Advanced Passenger Train, with profiled sides to allow a tilt of up to 6° and newly fitted tilting bogies. A refurbishment programme carried out between October 2003 and November 2005, known as ‘Project Mallard’, introduced new seating arrangements and onboard Wi-Fi.
