Hornby Mk4 Standard Coach D GNER 12427

Introduced for the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, the Mk4 coach became a defining part of InterCity East Coast services from 1989 onwards. Hornby’s Mk4 Standard Coach D GNER 12427 recreates this distinctive coaching stock as an authentically replicated model railway coach, reflecting a design that brought notable changes over earlier Mk3 vehicles.

The real Mk4 fleet was built at Metro-Cammell’s Washwood Heath factory, with 314 coaches produced between 1989 and 1992. They incorporated push-button operated plug-type doors, fully sealed gangways and a designed top speed of 140mph, with much of the design based on the Advanced Passenger Train. Later refurbishment work carried out by Bombardier Transportation for GNER between October 2003 and November 2005 introduced new seating arrangements and onboard Wi‑Fi as part of ‘Project Mallard’.
