Hornby Mk4 Standard Coach D LNER 12426

Introduced for the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, the Mk4 coach became a defining part of modern InterCity travel from 1989 onwards. This Hornby Mk4 Standard Coach D represents LNER vehicle 12426 as an authentically replicated model railway coach, suited to collectors and layout builders recreating East Coast services.

Built by Metro-Cammell between 1989 and 1992, the real Mk4 fleet brought notable advances over the Mk3, including push-button operated plug-type doors and fully sealed gangways, with a design influenced by the Advanced Passenger Train. Following privatisation in 1996, the coaches were sold to Evershot Rail Group and leased to successive InterCity East Coast franchise operators, including Great North Eastern Railway (GNER), National Express East Coast, East Coast, Virgin Trains East Coast and London North Eastern Railway (LNER). A refurbishment programme carried out by Bombardier Transportation for GNER between October 2003 and November 2005, known as Project Mallard, introduced new seating arrangements and onboard Wi-Fi.
