Hornby Mk4 Standard Coach Transport for Wales 12219

Introduced for the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, the Mk4 coach brought a new generation of passenger stock into service from 1989. This Hornby Mk4 Standard Coach in Transport for Wales livery, numbered 12219, recreates the distinctive design developed from the Advanced Passenger Train, including sides profiled to allow tilt of up to 6° with newly fitted tilting bogies. Mk4 coaches also introduced push-button operated plug-type doors and fully sealed gangways, with a designed top speed of 140mph.

Following privatisation in 1996, the Mk4 fleet was sold to Evershot Rail Group and leased to successive operators of the InterCity East Coast Franchise, including GNER, National Express East Coast, East Coast, Virgin Trains East Coast and London North Eastern Railway (LNER). A major refurbishment programme ran from October 2003 to November 2005 under contract from GNER, updating seating and introducing onboard Wi‑Fi as a first for British rail services.
