Hornby Mk4 Standard Coach Transport for Wales 12225

Introduced for the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, the Mk4 coach became a defining part of modern British rail travel from 1989 onwards. This Hornby Mk4 Standard Coach in Transport for Wales livery recreates that distinctive coaching stock as an authentically replicated model railway coach, suited to collectors and layout builders with an interest in contemporary UK passenger operations.

Built between 1989 and 1992 at Metro-Cammell’s Washwood Heath factory, the real Mk4 fleet brought notable design changes over earlier Mk3 vehicles, including push-button operated plug-type doors and fully sealed gangways. The design drew on the Advanced Passenger Train, with profiled sides intended to accommodate tilt up to 6° using newly fitted tilting bogies, and a designed top speed of 140mph. Following privatisation, the coaches were sold to Evershot Rail Group and leased to successive InterCity East Coast franchise operators, with refurbishment work carried out between October 2003 and November 2005 under ‘Project Mallard’.
