The Run Series by Jason Reynolds brings together four stories centred on a track team and the young runners who make it up. Across the collection, each book follows a different member of the Defenders as they navigate training, competition and the pressures that sit beyond the track.

From discovering unexpected talent to learning how to work with others, the series explores what it can mean to chase victory, find your place in a team and rethink what success looks like. This four-book set includes Ghost, Patina, Sunny and Lu.

Synopses

Ghost

Castle Cranshaw, known as Ghost, has always been running, but not for the right reasons. After meeting Coach, an ex-Olympic medallist, Ghost is recognised for his natural speed. With the chance to become the best sprinter in the city, he must stay on track while his past threatens to catch up with him.

Patina

Patina, or Patty, is determined to win. After losing her father young and with her mother having lost her legs, she now lives with her uncle and his wife and attends an extremely posh school. When her running team becomes a relay team, she has to learn to work with team mates rather than doing everything alone.

Sunny

When Sunny stops mid-race, Coach asks what he wants to do instead, and Sunny answers: dance. With his dad’s expectations weighing on him, he finds a track event that feels like dancing. As he trains for this new event, he faces what has been troubling him inside.

Lu

Lu believes he was born to co-captain the Defenders and lead the team to victory at the championships. Confident in his talent and determined not to be outshone, he expects to win gold. But new hurdles appear, literally and not-so-literally, forcing him to work out what winning really means.
