Synopses

The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency

Precious Ramotswe is introduced as Botswana’s only female private detective, known for warmth, wit and intuition. With support from Mr J. L. B. Matekoni, she investigates problems ranging from unfaithful partners to conmen, and takes on the trail of a missing child that leads into unsettling situations and danger.

Tears of The Giraffe

The second book returns to Mma Ramotswe as she faces new cases, including wayward wives and unscrupulous maids. She is also asked to address a mother’s long-standing pain over a son lost on the African plains, while changes in her personal life and at the agency bring further complications.

Morality For Beautiful Girls

Continuing Mma Ramotswe’s adventures, this instalment sees her expand her work into the world of car repair and a beauty pageant. The story follows on from the earlier books set around Botswana’s detective agency.

The Kalahari Typing School for Men

Precious encounters Cephas Buthelezi of the Satisfaction Guarantee Detective Agency and considers whether he can handle a case involving a man attacked by ostrich rustlers. At the same time, there are difficulties at Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors, problems at home, and romantic complications as Mma Makutsi establishes a typing school for men.

The Full Cupboard of Life

Still engaged to Mr J. L. B. Matekoni, Mma Ramotswe wonders when their wedding will be set, while trying not to pressure her fiancé. She is also approached by a wealthy woman from the hair-braiding business who wants several suitors investigated to determine whether they are motivated by money.

In The Company Of Cheerful Ladies

Now married to Mr J. L. B. Matekoni, Mma Ramotswe finds the agency busy as she responds to a woman’s plea of misfortune. Her efforts are disrupted by an accident involving her small white van, tensions between Mma Makutsi and an apprentice at the garage, and new developments in Mma Makutsi’s personal life, set against quiet moments of bush tea and wide skies.

Blue Shoes and Happiness

Newly married, Mma Ramotswe expects life to become calmer, but instead faces multiple troubling matters at once. These include blackmail and theft at a Government catering college, concerns at the Mokolodi Game Reserve, and suspicious activity at a health clinic, alongside her reflections on happiness in small things.

The Good Husband of Zebra Drive

As the seasons change in Botswana, life at Zebra Drive is unsettled. The agency pursues cases including theft at a printing works and three suspicious deaths at a hospital, while discontent grows around Charlie’s behaviour and Mma Makutsi’s impending marriage; Mr Matekoni’s attempt at detective work threatens to end badly.

The Miracle At Speedy Motors

Mma Ramotswe receives a threatening letter that shakes her faith in the goodness of those around her. Even so, she continues to help an orphan searching for her true family, while Mr J. L. B. Matekoni looks for an expensive miracle for their foster daughter, Motholeli.

Tea Time For The Traditionally Built

Mma Makutsi’s engagement to Phuti Radiphuti runs into trouble with the arrival of Violet Sephotho. Meanwhile, Mma Ramotswe agrees to help when the owner of the Kalahari Swoopers asks her to identify a traitor within the football team.
