Synopsis

An ancient collection of spells, prayers and incantations, The Egyptian Book of the Dead was created to guide the departed through the perils of the underworld. Written as part of funeral rites intended to ensure eternal life, these texts were often placed in the sarcophagus of the deceased and remain a revealing window onto Egyptian culture.

This illustrated edition draws on the Papyrus of Ani, an ancient Egyptian scroll describing the journey of the Theban scribe Ani through the underworld. With hieroglyphic text translated by the Egyptologist E.A. Wallis Budge, it includes spells addressed to a ferryman, gods and kings to aid Ani on the way to the afterlife.
