The Ultimate Stink-tastic Collection brings together ten books by Megan McDonald featuring Stink Moody, Judy Moody’s little “bother”. Across the set, Stink tackles everyday worries and big ideas with plenty of determination, from fretting about his height to taking on new challenges at school and at home.
These stories follow Stink through a mix of mishaps and missions: writing complaint letters with unexpected results, testing his “amazing sniffing abilities”, and even setting out to “save the planet . . . Pluto!” The collection also includes adventures involving runaway guinea pigs, thumb-wrestling ambitions, a town’s Midnight Zombie Walk, swimming struggles sparked by a frog encounter, an aquarium sleepover with sharks, and a slime mould that takes over his room.
Stink is short, and he thinks he is shrinking. He has Judy measure him every day, and when he comes up shorter, he tries different ways to make himself taller. Before long, he starts to wonder whether being short is really such a problem.
Stink complains about a jawbreaker that did not break his jaw and discovers that a letter of complaint can bring surprising results. His letter-writing soon gets a bit carried away when he is sent a huge box of sweets.
Stink’s class visits the Gross-Me-Out exhibition at the science museum, where he finds out his nose has impressive sniffing abilities. He then sets his sights on a stinky-sneaker contest and the Golden Clothespin Award.
Stink Moody sets out on a mission to reinstate his favourite celestial orb: Pluto. He takes on the role of “Solar System Superhero” as he aims to save the planet.
Three guinea pigs escape from the local pet shop, and Stink Moody teams up with Webster and Sophie to help. The Fantastic Fur Friends round them up and return them to Mrs. Birdwistle’s shop, where guinea pig pandemonium awaits.
Stink needs a sport fast, and thumb wars become a serious goal. After bringing home a report card that is not perfect, he tries to get into fighting shape and beat back a U for Unsatisfactory in gym.
With one week to go until a new book in the Nightmare on Zombie Street series is released, Stink plans to be first in line at the Blue Frog Bookstore. While waiting, he and his friends make ketchup-stained zombie costumes, raise money for the book, and collect points for their school’s race to one million minutes of reading.
After a close encounter with a mutant amphibian leaves him “freaky for frogs”, water-shy Stink becomes a swimming success. Despite being in the Polliwog swim class for a long time, he still struggles to put his face in the water.
Stink’s parents win an aquarium sleepover, and Stink gets to sleep with the fishes. He loves learning about sharks, but he is not sure he wants to spend the night in the same room as them.
Stink encounters slime mould, described as looking like dog vomit and smelling like a corpse flower. Even though he is a super science geek, he feels freaked out when slime mould starts living and growing in his room.
