This three-book collection brings together Junji Ito’s manga interpretations and original horror storytelling in one set: No Longer Human, The Liminal Zone and Frankenstein. The selection spans adaptation and standalone tales, presenting unsettling imagery and psychological tension across each volume.

No Longer Human adapts Osamu Dazai’s “supposedly autobiographical” work of Japanese literature, following Yozo Oba as he hides behind a clownish mask while grappling with anxiety, shame and a profound sense of disconnection. The Liminal Zone offers four tales of terror, including encounters with a “weeping woman” and a journey into Aokigahara. Frankenstein reimagines Mary Shelley’s classic horror novel, and also includes the Oshikiri story cycle and a bonus featuring Ito’s dog, Non-non Ito.

Synopses

No Longer Human

Yozo Oba describes a life marked by shame and a relentless anxiety about what it means to live as a human being. As his idea of happiness clashes with the joy he sees in others, he performs as a clown, keeping up a mask while spiralling downward, close to death. Osamu Dazai’s “supposedly autobiographical” work is adapted into manga by Junji Ito, with imagery that renders Yozo’s mental landscape in delicate and grotesque detail.

The Liminal Zone

After leaving a train in a small town, a couple encounters a “weeping woman”, a professional mourner crying at a funeral, and Mako finds she cannot stop crying afterwards. In another story, a couple who decide to die together enter Aokigahara, described here as an infamous suicide forest, where they discover a shocking otherworldly torrent. The volume presents four tales of terror.

Frankenstein

Junji Ito adapts Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, depicting the solitary monster and the creator responsible for bringing him to life. Also included is the Oshikiri story cycle, centred on a high school student living in a decaying mansion connected to a haunted parallel world, with uncanny doppelgangers and murdered friends. A bonus section features Ito’s dog, Non-non Ito, an “adorable Maltese”.
