Synopses

One Special Village

Harry Makepeace is a widower in Manchester, doing what he can to support his unwell daughter, Cathie. After a severe asthma attack, doctors advise a move to the countryside for her to have any chance of survival. When Harry finds land for sale in Ellindale and an advert for a disused railway carriage that could be turned into a home, he acts quickly.

One Kind Man

Finn Carlisle is left reeling after the loss of his wife and unborn child, and spends years travelling to escape his grief. When he is ready to settle, a great-uncle’s death changes his circumstances, leaving Finn an unexpected inheritance. Among the bequests is Heythorpe House in Ellindale, close to Leah Willcox and her small fizzy drink factory.

One Quiet Woman

Leah Turner’s father is killed in an accident at the laundry, and with her mother gone, responsibility for her younger sister falls to her. With women’s wages half those of men, and only a few possessions left to pawn, time is short. Even if she finds work, the threat of losing their home remains.

One Perfect Family

Tam is known for acting on impulse, but he is determined to think carefully this time. Even so, in a single day he finds himself responsible for a fiancée and two children, trying to keep them out of the poorhouse. As they begin to understand one another, they see his charitable decision in a new light, though practical difficulties persist, including the struggle to find somewhere to live.
