Bernardine Evaristo Collection brings together three novels: Soul Tourists, Mr Loverman and Blonde Roots. Spanning contemporary life and reimagined history, the set introduces a range of characters navigating grief, identity and society, from a London banker questioning his routine to a Hackney local living with a long-held secret.

Across the collection, journeys take different forms: a road trip across Europe that brushes against the continent’s past, a double life shaped by family and desire, and a satirical inversion of the transatlantic slave trade that reframes power and oppression. Together, these books present distinct premises while remaining rooted in sharp observation and social commentary.

Synopses

Soul Tourists

Stanley Williams is single, in his thirties, and grieving the death of his Jamaican father while questioning whether there is more to life than his nine-to-five banking job. He meets Jessie O’Donnell, a barmaid and former singer-cum-comedienne, who is determined to take to the road in her old Lady Niva and drive across Europe. Their journey becomes an odyssey that moves in and out of history, colliding with forgotten heroes from Europe’s past.

Mr Loverman

Barrington Jedidiah Walker is seventy-four and leads a double life. Born and bred in Antigua, he has lived in Hackney since the sixties and is known locally for his flamboyant style, sharp humour and fondness for quoting Shakespeare. A husband, father and grandfather, Barrington is also secretly homosexual and in a relationship with his childhood friend, Morris.

Blonde Roots

This novel presents an inversion of the transatlantic slave trade, in which ‘whytes’ are enslaved by black people. It is described as a thought-provoking satire that aims to bring the brutality of the past uncomfortably close, while raising questions about society today.
