With a deep taproot, blue lupin helps access nutrients deeper in the soil and can assist with breaking up compacted ground to improve drainage. After flowering, it can be tilled back into the soil as green manure to help improve soil structure. The blooms are also popular with insects, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Sow indoors in late winter or early spring, using two seeds per pot and covering with a thin layer of soil. Keep the soil moist and warm; germination takes about two weeks. Transplant outdoors in spring once the weather has warmed, spacing plants about 12 inches apart. Blue lupin prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and can tolerate sandy or clay soils.
